Description
The Elder Futhark is a 24 character alphabet used by Germanic people during the migration period. Despite popular belief and modern fiction, the Elder Futhark runes fell from favor at the onset of the Viking Age. For the Scandinavian expansion, literacy rates had to be lifted. The Younger Futhark with only 16 characters evolved from the Elder Futhark for that purpose.
Although the Elder Futhark fell from of favor for written language, it found a home in esoterica. While it is impossible to determine when, each of the 24 characters acquired individual beaning beyond their original use as characters in an alphabet.
Note that the spelling varies between references. I’ve used what seems most agreed upon / constants by the many sources.
