The discovery is being called the Rold Hoard. Weighing in at 762.5 grams, it is the third largest recorded discovery in Denmark to date. As it’s name implies, it was discovered in the municipality of Rold, which has merged with Arden. They have been dated to the late 10th century by the National Museum of Denmark.
The first part of the find was two bracelets found in April, 2026. The discovery was made with out the use of a metal detector. They were sticking out of the ground. Upon examination by the archaeological department of Nordjyske Museer, aka the Viking Museum, a team was sent for further investigation. The other four bracelets were found with the use of metal detectors.
“It is a completely unique find. We simply haven’t experienced anything like it before here at the museum,” said Torben Sarauw
The bracelets are rare and unique due to being intact as well as the material and craftsmanship. Gold was far more rare than silver and the craftsmanship was fine. Each was made from wire drawn from nearly pure gold. Three were then cold forged to shape. Three were created with a twisting process. Bracelets like these were owned by the highest stations in Viking Age society.
The dating of these bracelets might give insight into why they were buried. King Harald Bluetooth declared Denmark a Christian nation 965 CE by literally writing it into stone. Specifically the second of the famous Jelling Stones.
History that speaks fondly of Bluetooth say he united Denmark under a single king and religion. What polite history often fails to mention is that not all leaders wanted to bow and not all heathens wanted to convert. It was a very good time to hide one’s wealth.
