Description
To facilitate the Scandinavian expansion, the Younger Futhark evolved out of the Elder Futhark.. The organizational needs of the Viking Age created the need for a much higher literacy rate. A shorter character set, 16 rather than 24, made writting easier to read and teach. Despite modern fiction and popular opinion, the Younger Futhark was the Viking runes.
As with the Elder Futhark, what began as an alphabet took on esoteric associations. Each rune received meaning beyond original intent.
