Written by A Danish homeowner discovered a hoard of Viking Age silver under their patio. Theor they discovered the largest hoard of Viking Age silver in Denmark’s history. Officials from North Jutland Museums made the announcement on Aug. 31, 2026.
Jewelry, coins, ingots, a Thor’s hammer, Christian crosses, and other valuable artifacts were discovered. In all, some 700 objects weighed in at about 40 pounds. Most were recovered from clay and soil. About 200 were found in ceramic vessels. Previously, the Danish weight record was 14 pounds.
“One ingot bears runic inscriptions that may have been intended to protect the treasure, while others are marked with Thor’s hammers and Christian crosses.” – Torben Sarauw, head of cultural heritage at North Jutland Museums.
Unfortunately for the homeowner but fortunately forth preservation of history, the Viking rule ‘finder’s keepers’ is not the law in Denmark. The homeowner will keep only a modest reward and bragging rights. The artifacts themselves are considered the property of Denmark.
